Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

    What is HypnoBirthing®?

HypnoBirthing® is antenatal childbirth education program. It encourages a calm, relaxing and empowering way to birth. It allows mums to experience birth in an easier, more comfortable manner, just the way nature intended. HypnoBirthing® is an easy to learn program using deep relaxation, visualisation and dedicated breathing techniques.

How long has HypnoBirthing been going?

HypnoBirthing was founded by Marie Mongan (commonly known as Mickey), who used some of what we still teach during the births of her own 4 children. Marie officially introduced HypnoBirthing to America in 1989. The method, proved to be very popular, so much so that she expanded the program internationally. HypnoBirthing is now taught in over 70 countries, and Australia has over 190 and growing certified practitioners.

    Does it really work?

        It sure does! Countless of couples have had positive birth experiences because of HypnoBirthing®. The 2016 Australian statistics derived from the survey that our parents complete after birth reinforce what we, as practitioners already know;

339 participants, completed the post-birth survey. 73.75% were first time mothers
        Only 12.8 % reported a C-section – Our National average is 33%
Only 20.43% had an epidural – Our National average is 46.5%

This is a reduction in C-sections by 61%, and a reduction in epidural use by 56%

5.3% of this group were VBACs
7.78% of this group birthed at home
65.27% of this group went into labour spontaneously without any effort to get it started, 12.27% used natural methods to initiate labour, and
only 21.86 % were induced by their care providers.

82.32% of births ended with mother baby skin to skin immediately or within the first hour after birth.

    How does it work?

HypnoBirthing® teaches mums and their birth companions techniques such as visualisations and special breathing. We teach you to eliminate any fear and tension you may have around birth and replace it with confidence, knowledge and a calm presence. We also teach you about the process of birth, looking after yourself during pregnancy and advocating for yourself during labour thus making sure that you have the birth experience that you desire.

When is the best time to commence the classes?

You can start HypnoBirthing® classes anytime during your pregnancy however, to get the most out of the program you should ideally be between 20 and 34 weeks. Please contact me if you are further along in your pregnancy as we may be able to arrange something to suit.

    How many classes are there?

Classes are run weekly over 5 weeks for 3 hours each week.

How much do the HypnoBirthing® classes cost?

The cost of the 5 x 3 hour group classes is $625 per couple. Group classes are limited to eight mums and their birth companions and fill quickly; it is recommended that you book early to avoid disappointment.

Private classes can also be arranged and are typically delivered in the same 5 x 2.5 hour sessions format. They are delivered in the comfort of your own home. The cost is $1100 per couple.

For both group and private classes, the cost includes:
        • Official Hypnobirthing® - The Mongan Method Book & CD
        • Official Australian Rainbow Relaxation & Affirmations MP3
        • A comprehensive Birth Preferences Template
        • A comprehensive range of handouts, including additional relaxation scripts, information on nutrition and exercise, articles to support evidenced based birthing and medical procedures and much more.
        • Continued support via the phone and email through to your birth and into the postpartum period

What will we learn at the classes?

Over the 5 weeks you will learn a lot, it is part of the reason that we conduct our classes over that length of time. We find it the perfect amount of information so you don’t suffer information overload and you have time to practice what we are teaching. Yes, participating in the course is not a magic pill for a calm, stress-free and empowering birth; you will need to practice the relaxation, self-hypnosis, breathing techniques etc.

Should my husband/birth companion attend with me?

ABSOLUTELY! In HypnoBirthing® we are all about the family that you are creating. We spend a lot of time teaching your birth companion just how important their role is in your upcoming birth. Your birth companion is someone who will be supporting you through birth, it may be your husband, partner, mother, sister, best friend etc.
